Ailsa Chapman reflects on a month that saw her class celebrating the Royal Wedding in a way that encompassed many learning areas. Her next challenge is to complete 52 end-of-term reports.

Last month gave us a very mixed bag in terms of weather. We are fully free-flow throughout the session in nursery and we experienced the entire spectrum of seasons including intense heat, cold to make us shiver and torrential rain, on and off. Very heavy rain usually means a flash flood in our nursery, where the water seeps under the door!

Our focus

The Royal Wedding was our main focus, with the children bringing in photos of themselves as bridemaids/page boys and photos of their parents’ or relatives’ weddings. We showed these photos in our whole class carpet sessions and looked at the clothing and talked about the people in the photos. We read Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s The Scarecrow’s Wedding and children were very interested in knights and castles following the discussions about Windsor Castle.
